How to Set Up a Complete Home Security System in One Weekend

By hs_pfroum June 8, 2026 2 min read

Setting up a complete home security system in a weekend is entirely achievable with modern wireless and DIY equipment. You do not need professional installation, specialist tools, or technical knowledge. With the right planning and equipment choices, one Saturday and Sunday is enough to cover your most important entry points with cameras, sensors, and a working alarm.

Day 1: Planning and Setup Preparation

Morning: Security Walk

Before buying anything, walk around your property and identify every entry point. Note which windows are accessible from the ground, where deliveries are typically left, and which approaches to the building feel undermonitored. Sketch a rough floor plan and mark where you would ideally place cameras and sensors.

Afternoon: Equipment Selection

Based on your walkthrough, choose your system. For most homes a reasonable starting combination is: one video doorbell for the front door, one outdoor camera for the rear or driveway, one indoor camera for the main living area, and a basic alarm kit covering front and back door contact sensors with a PIR motion detector. See our alarm systems guide for kit recommendations. See our video doorbell guide for front-door options.

Day 2: Installation Day

Start with the Alarm

Modern wireless alarm kits like Ring Alarm and Yale Smart Living install in under two hours. Mount the base station centrally, press the keypad adhesive to the inside of the front door frame, and attach contact sensors to each door. The motion detector sits in a corner of your main living area at about head height. Follow the app setup guide — each sensor takes under five minutes to register and test.

Then Cameras

Install the video doorbell next. If wiring is available, connect it to the existing doorbell wires. If battery-powered, ensure the battery is fully charged first. Follow the in-app setup and adjust the motion zone to exclude the pavement so you are not notified every time someone walks past. Outdoor cameras mount with included hardware — choose a position that covers the most ground without aiming at a neighbours property.

Final: App Configuration

Spend the final hour adjusting notification settings, motion sensitivity, and arming schedules. Most people benefit from setting the alarm to arm automatically at a fixed bedtime and disarm when the first person wakes up. Camera motion zones take five minutes to configure properly and dramatically reduce false alerts. Review our blind spots guide to check you have not missed any common vulnerabilities.

What You Will Have at the End

By Sunday evening, you will have a working video doorbell, at least one outdoor camera, a PIR motion alarm covering your main living space, and contact sensors on your two main entry doors. The whole system is app-controlled, sends motion alerts to your phone, and sounds a local alarm if triggered. Total time: roughly 4–6 hours of active work across the weekend.
