Ring Alarm is one of the easiest home alarm systems to install — but the setup process has a specific order that matters. Follow these steps to get your Ring Alarm running correctly the first time.
What You Need Before Starting
Ring Alarm 5-piece kit (or 8-piece). A smartphone with the Ring app installed. Your home Wi-Fi password. Around 90 minutes. That is everything. No tools are required for sensor mounting unless you choose to use screws instead of the included adhesive strips.
Step 1: Download the Ring App and Create an Account
Download the Ring app (iOS or Android) and create a free account before you open the box. Have your Wi-Fi password ready. The app guides every subsequent step — do not skip ahead by connecting hardware before the app prompts you.
Step 2: Set Up the Base Station
Place the base station in a central location — ideally a hallway or main living area where it can communicate with sensors throughout the property. Connect it to power with the included cable. Follow the app: scan the QR code on the back, connect to your Wi-Fi, and wait for the green light. The base station takes 2–3 minutes to configure. It will then prompt you to add your first sensor.
Step 3: Add Each Sensor in Order
Add sensors one at a time via the app. Scan the QR code on each sensor, give it a name (Front Door, Back Window, etc.), and the app assigns it to the base station. Test each sensor by opening and closing the door or window — the base station chimes to confirm detection. Add all sensors before mounting any of them permanently.
Step 4: Mount Sensors
Once all sensors are registered and tested, mount them using the adhesive strips. Door sensors: one part on the door frame, the second on the door itself, aligned so the two halves sit within 2cm when the door is closed. Window sensors: same approach on the window frame and sash. PIR motion detector: corner of the room at 2m height, angled across the entry route.
Step 5: Add the Keypad
Mount the keypad inside your main entry door. Set your PIN code via the app. Test arming and disarming before finishing — arm the system from the app, wait for it to arm, then enter your PIN at the keypad to disarm. Confirm it works before relying on it.
Step 6: Configure the App
Set your entry delay (time between opening the door and the alarm triggering — typically 30–60 seconds). Set motion sensitivity on the PIR. Enable app notifications. Add emergency contacts who receive alerts if you are unavailable. Optionally activate Ring Protect monitoring.
