The biggest upgrade over the Doorbell 3 is color Pre-Roll. Instead of capturing footage from the moment motion triggers, the Doorbell 4 records the four seconds before the alert using low-power color video. In practice this means you see what led to the alert — someone walking up the path — not just the moment they reached the door. It sounds minor. In daily use it genuinely changes how useful the footage is.
Video Quality
1080p HD at 30fps. The image is sharp, well-exposed in daylight, and handles the contrast challenges of a bright outdoors with a darker interior porch better than most competitors at this price. HDR processing reduces the washed-out look you get when a subject is backlit. Night vision uses Ring’s color-capable sensor — you get color footage if there is any ambient light (streetlights, porch lights) and clean infrared black-and-white in complete darkness. Field of view is 155° horizontal — wide enough to catch anyone approaching from either side of the path.
Installation
Battery mode needs no wiring at all. Charge the battery fully (around 6 hours), mount the bracket with the included adhesive wedge or screws, attach the doorbell, and follow the app setup. The whole process takes under 30 minutes including app configuration. For wired installation, connect the existing doorbell wires to the bracket terminals — polarity does not matter — and the doorbell charges continuously from the transformer.
